下面是一些对加拿大人影响深远的节日本身及其由来: 一、New Year's Day (1月1日) New Years Day is a public holiday to mark the arrival of the new year. The date on which this day occurs varies each year because it is based on the Gregorian calendar, instead of the older Julian calendar; accordingly, New Year’s Day changes from year to year between January 1 and August 31, occurring at least once every 47 years, with an average interval of about 33 years between occurrences of that day falling in April or May. In Canada, New Year’s Eve celebrations are held on December 31 while most people spend their first day of the new year relaxing at home. However some cities celebrate on January 1 such as Saint John, NB where they hold big parades and parties on city streets. Most Canadians attend church services on New Year’s Day. On both Christmas and New Year’s Day, churches and other buildings are lit by candles rather than electricity because of the power outages caused when ice builds up on overhead wires during winter storms – so many communities decorate trees with candles for these holidays! Some stores open late into the night before New Year’s Eve but close completely on New Year’s Day although banks remain open on all days. Restaurants usually stay closed throughout the whole week but start serving again after those two public holidays. Some hotels even offer “restaurant service” over this break! 在新年前夜,人们会聚集到酒店、酒吧等社交场所参加跨年派对活动,在钟声敲响的那一刻,人们会互道新年快乐并亲吻对方来庆祝新年的到来。
二、Good Friday (复活节前的星期五) Good Friday is a legal holiday marking the day Jesus was crucified according to Christian tradition. It falls on the Fridays before Easter Sunday, which is celebrated four weeks afterward. Because Christians use the Julian Calendar, its dates change each year compared to the modern-day Gregorian calendar; consequently, sometimes there can be more than one Good Friday in any given year if Easter doesn’t fall on April 16th or later. For instance: There were three Good Fridays in 2012——on March 3
